First boat for a hundred years?
When the North Wilts Canal was completed in 1819 it
provided a link from the Wilts and Berks Canal at Swindon to the Thames and
Severn Canal at Latton. In order to preserve water supplies a stop lock,
with little or no change of level, was built at Latton. A large basin was
also constructed in order to allow for the transhipment of cargoes between the
boats of different dimension which traded on the respective canals. The
North Wilts boats were 72' by 7', whereas boats on the Thames and Severn were of
differing lengths and wider beam.
