Saturday
21st April
Yet again a great turnout on a wonderful summer day in April.
The main task was the big Ash tree on the aqueduct which has now
been reduced, leaving just (just?) the stump and roots to remove.
Not obvious from the pictures but we also cleared along the towpath
to the Churn making it easier for the many walkers who passed by
during the day. We were so busy that I didn't get the camera
out until nearly midday, but fortunately Phil was recording the day
on video. At day's end the eastern wall of the aqueduct was
fully exposed. As soon as the water level drops we will be
able to see how the structure, especially the arches, has stood the
last two centuries.

The weeds are starting to come
back in the Basin and will have
to be dealt with soon.

This area was Alfred's

Although the weight has been
reduced this Ash will still
require a lot of work to
remove it without doing any
further damage.

The top of one of the arches.
As soon as the water level goes
down we will be able to see just
how they were constructed.
