December 2005
On a cold frosty day a team of workers
descended on the basin and proceeded to clear the years of
growth that covered two thirds of the historic site.
For
the first time in decades the full size of the basin could be
appreciated.
This timely exercise revealed the basin to be in excellent condition
for its age. Although several trees had forced their massive
roots through the stones and some of the coping stones had been
relocated the basin is more or less intact.
Full restoration would be, in canal terms, very easy.
Separated by only a few yards from the Thames& Severn Canal, it
would take only a short aqueduct over the River Churn to breathe
life back into this "Heritage" site and, perhaps, become the start
of a new branch canal to Cricklade.
